Sigma Mu Mu Chapter Supports Reading Spirit Week Program at Leesburg Elementary School

On March 1, 2024, Sigma Mu Mu Chapter, Third District of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., participated in Leesburg Elementary School’s “Reading Under the Sea” Spirit Week Program. The program consisted of a series of events throughout the week designed to motivate students to read more; events included
Pirate Day, Tropical Tuesday, Sleep With the Fishes Day, and Red Fish Blue Fish Day. The week’s activities culminated in the big Reading Under the Sea Literacy Night which took place at the school in Leesburg, VA and attracted than 100 students and parents. Members of Sigma Mu Mu, Leesburg
Elementary teachers, and other volunteers set up reading stations throughout the school and read short stories to the students during the evening. To close out the event, Omega’s Third District Representative and Principal of Leesburg Elementary, Brother Shawn Lacey, was joined by the Sigma Mu
Mu Basileus, Brother Duane Keye, and Sigma Mu Mu Brother Brian Porter as characters in the school play, “The Day the Crayon’s Quit”. They dressed as crayons and read from the book of the same nameby Drew Daywalt.  “We truly appreciate Principal Lacey and Mrs. Lisa Schwarz (Leesburg Elementary Reading Specialist)
inviting us to participate in their reading spirit week program. It is very inspiring to see so may children getting excited about reading”, said Brother Duane Keye.
Sigma Mu Mu participated in the reading spirit week event as part of its ongoing Loudoun County Public School Literacy Program. For more than a decade, Sigma Mu Mu Chapter has served the children of the Loudoun community through several different initiatives. The chapter’s Literacy Program is one of the longest running and most successful campaigns. The chapter believes it shares responsibility for children’s literacy and learning, so its continued collaboration with parents and teachers is going to be key to help children of Loudoun County become stronger readers.
