SMM Chapter’s Dr. Charles R. Drew Blood Drive Replenishes Local Blood Supply

Submitted By Brother Leroy Ross

Sterling, VA - On November 6, 2021, Sigma Mu Mu Chapter, Third District of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., began its Achievement Week activities with a Dr. Charles R. Drew Blood Drive. The event was held at the Inova Dulles Blood Donor Center in Sterling. All slots during the drive were filled. Thanks to the efforts of the Brothers, their families, members of the NAACP, and the local community, this life-saving endeavor was a success. Eighteen (18) units of whole blood and one (1) unit of platelets were donated during the blood drive. According to the American Red Cross, whole blood is the most flexible type of donation. Whole blood can be transfused in its original form or used to help multiple people when separated into its specific components of red cells, plasma, and platelets. Whole blood is frequently given to trauma patients and people undergoing surgery. The American Red Cross website notes that the organization is experiencing the worst blood shortage in over a decade. The dangerously low blood supply levels have forced some hospitals to defer patients from major surgery, including organ transplants. In light of the blood shortage, Sigma Mu Mu’s effort was incredibly impactful and appreciated. After the event, the Inova Blood Donor Center coordinator, Mr. Gino Pascual, expressed his gratitude to Sigma Mu Mu for going above and beyond expectations for the blood drive effort.
