Sigma Mu Mu Chapter Celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King Day, January 16, 2023!

As we celebrate and commemorate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., let us be mindful of our immense responsibilities as citizens to live a passionate life of service to others! Dr. King’s message resonates today as much as it did during the Civil Rights Movement, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, what are you doing for others?” The Omega Psi Phi Fraternity’s Cardinal Principles, Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance, and Uplift are foundational attributes that lend themselves to serving others. Omega men are primarily focused on “Uplift.” One of our four Founders, Dr. Oscar J. Cooper, outlined the virtues of our Cardinal Principles in a letter he pinned on November 4^th, 1962.

“With these three Cardinal Principles found to be present, we naturally develop a high spirit of altruism and Uplift, devoid of any selfishness and with a natural spirit and tendency to be of service to others, in proportion as we have developed the three previous principles and should make ourselves felt as an entity in any community in which we exist: for strong characters and ambitions should naturally spread beyond the narrow confines of the person or the organization represented by the person.”

Charity begins in the heart. To serve others, we must first be charitable and giving “at home.” We must be devoted to one another in Brotherly Love! We cannot be overcome by evil, but we should overcome evil with good! Dr. King eloquently challenged each of us to let Brotherly Love continue. Our fate depends on our ability to Uplift one another through grace, love, and commitment!

“We must learn to live together as Brothers, or we will perish together as fools.”
