Sigma Mu Mu Attends Heart Healthy Cooking Seminar to Increase Health Awareness
On February 12, 2026, Sigma Mu Mu Chapter, Third District of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., attended a Healthy Heart Seminar at the Sterling Library in Sterling, VA. The event, held in recognition of American Heart Month, featured a Heart Healthy Cooking presentation led by nutrition educator Ms. Emily Jacobs of the Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE). The VCE serves the residents of Loudoun County, VA by providing research-based educational programs and training designed to improve quality of life. As the local outreach arm of Virginia Tech and Virginia State University, VCE works closely with community stakeholders to address issues related to health, agriculture, youth development, and environmental stewardship.
During the seminar, Ms. Jacobs delivered an engaging presentation highlighting the impact of dietary choices on cardiovascular health. Through an informative slideshow, she discussed the differences between “good” and “bad” trans fats, the health implications of various cooking oils, and the influence everyday food choices can have on the overall functioning of the body’s vital organs as well as heart health. Participants also explored how lifestyle factors—particularly sedentary habits—can contribute to long-term health risks.
The program concluded with an open discussion that allowed attendees to ask questions and share perspectives on practical ways to improve daily nutrition. Guests were also treated to a sample of Waldorf salad prepared by the host staff, providing a simple example of a heart-healthy dish that can be incorporated into everyday meals. Members of Sigma Mu Mu’s Health Initiatives Committee and the other attendees left the seminar with a deeper understanding of how diet and lifestyle affect the body and reaffirmed their commitment to making healthier choices.
As communities observe American Heart Month, programs like this highlight the powerful role nutrition plays in maintaining heart health. By making simple, informed dietary choices and adopting more active lifestyles, individuals can take meaningful steps toward long-term wellness—because caring for the heart requires not only love, but nourishment.
