Sigma Mu Mu Chapter Attends MLK and Obama Statue Unveiling in Leesburg, VA

On June 17, 2025, Sigma Mu Mu Chapter, Third District of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., attended the unveiling of two new welcoming statues at the Douglass Community Center Playground in Leesburg, VA; the statues honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and President Barack Obama.   Dr. King's statue welcomes visitors with the words " I Have A Dream" while President Obama's includes a reminder that " Your Voice Can Change The World”.  Both statues enhance the playground’s appearance while providing inspiration to learn and live with purpose. The statues were created by Loudoun sculptor Jeff Hall, who stated that much of his research for the statues focused on worthy speeches by Dr. King and President Obama to learn their mannerisms and find the best pose for the respective pieces.

The Douglass Community Center Playground is a premier playground located on the grounds of the Historic Douglass High School.  It has won several awards for its design, which focuses on celebrating the global impact and contributions of African Americans, so the addition of the King and Obama statues is fitting.  Brother Leroy Ross was proud to represent Omega as well as Sigma Mu Mu at the lightly- attended unveiling which was sponsored by Loudoun County Parks, Recreation and Community Services.  His attendance served as a reminder to the sponsor and community that Sigma Mu Mu is committed to uplift and can be relied upon to support worthy causes even when others may not.
