Sigma Mu Mu Chapter Hosts Northern Area II Joint Memorial Service
On March 9, 2025, Sigma Mu Mu Chapter, Third District of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., hosted the District’s Northern Area II Joint Memorial Service at Heritage Fellowship Church in Reston, VA. More than 80 brothers from Northern Area II chapters Eta Delta Delta, Tau Rho, Pi Lambda Lambda, Psi Nu, Psi Alpha Alpha, Omicron Kappa Kappa, and Sigma Mu Mu attended this mandated program; VIP attendees included Third District Representative, Brother Shawn Lacey; 1st Vice District Representative, Brother Craig Spraggins; District Chaplain, Brother Courtenay Miller; District Director of Public Relations, Brother Calvin Beidelman; and Northern Area II Supervisor Brother Earl Smith. Sigma Mu Mu Basileus Brother Duane Keye opened the program by welcoming Brothers and guests; acknowledging District officers in attendance; sharing personal reflections about the annual Memorial Service in light hearing his Dean of Pledges memorialized during the 2024 Conclave Memorial Service; and reviewing the program agenda. Sigma Mu Mu Chaplain Brother David Bonner then led attendees in prayer before Brother Lacey spoke on the purpose and importance of the occasion, after which chaplains from participating chapters conducted the Memorial Service program.
The program included scripture readings by chaplains of Psi Alpha Alpha, Psi Nu, and Pi Lambda Lambda, hymns led by Brother James Daniels of Omicron Kappa Kappa Chapter, and an inspirational message delivered by Brother Miller who challenged Brothers to understand who we are as Omega Men, and to be ready for the challenges of the days ahead. In memoriam, Brothers spoke the names of Third District brothers who entered Omega Chapter during the past year; they included Brother Anderson Grimley (Gamma Sigma, 1965), Brother Terence Peterson (Phi Nu, 1995) and several others.
While the Memorial Service was, and always is, a solemn event, Brothers found it uplifting to fellowship afterwards when a group photo and individual chapter photos were taken. The fellowship continued during a repast at a local restaurant where memories of Omega Chapter brothers and others were shared over a meal and beverages. Sigma Mu Mu thanks the participating chapters for their attendance as well as their help in planning and conducting this important mandated program.
