Sigma Mu Mu Participates in Two Loudoun County, VA Black History Month Events

In February 2025, Sigma Mu Mu Chapter, Third District of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., supported two Black History Events sponsored by Loudoun County Parks, Recreation and Community Services.  At both events, Sigma Mu Mu showcased Omega’s history and accomplishments as well as the Chapter’s local community service programs and scholarship opportunities.  Bro. Leroy Ross coordinated Sigma Mu Mu’s participation while Brothers Michael Bennett, Derrick Clarke, Gene Davis, Kevin Wiggs, Ralph Whitfield, Jerome Smith, and others helped make the events fun, educational, festive, and successful.

The first event was the Black History Month Expo held on 15 February at the Sterling Community Center in Sterling, VA. The program celebrated Black excellence, culture, and contributions throughout history.  Event organizer and Sterling Community Center Coordinator Ms. Robin Roberts welcomed attendees to the uplifting affair which featured local vendors, artists, live performances, music, educational exhibits, and speakers, including the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors At Large Chairperson, Ms. Phyllis Randall, who delivered the keynote message.  More than fifty (50) attendees enjoyed performances by Imagine Rock Band, PR Fitness, TDC Dance Studio, One Take Dance Studios and spoken word by Alonzo Patterson.  Sigma Mu Mu’s own Bro. Derrick Clarke, also known as DJ Bifocals, created a party atmosphere by spinning tunes from a playlist that rocked the house.  Ms. Roberts and her staff thanked the vendors, participants and attendees for making the Expo an informative and successful event; they also personally requested Sigma Mu Mu to partner with the Sterling Community Center on future events.

The second event was hosted by the Douglass Community Center on 22 February at the Douglass Community Center and Historic High School in Leesburg, VA.  It was attended by dozens of Loudoun residents and featured live performances, community and Black-owned business vendors, children’s activities, and food from local food trucks.  The program included a welcome by Loudoun County Parks, Recreation and Community Services director, Mr. Steve Torpy; remarks about Black History by Ms. Randall and Leesburg Mayor Kelly Burke; and performances by local talent such as Opus Dance Movement and the Good Morning Tomorrow Band.  Sigma Mu Mu enjoyed sharing Fraternity and Chapter information with attendees which increased community awareness of Sigma Mu Mu’s local activities, Omega’s place in Black history, and Black history, in general. The Chapter looks forward to continuing its community uplift efforts throughout the year.
