Sigma Mu Mu Chapter Recognizes and Rewards Top Readers at Sugarland Elementary

On December 9, 2024, Sigma Mu Mu Chapter, Third District of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., concluded its fall Que Bucks Reading Program at Sugarland Elementary School by celebrating with students and teachers.  Sigma Mu Mu’s annual Que Bucks program at the Sterling, VA school encourages and motivates elementary school students to read by rewarding them for doing so.  Points known as Que Bucks are awarded to students based on the number of minutes they read, and those who earn the most Que Bucks during the competition receive prizes such as Kindles and bikes.  During the celebration, children in grades K-5 were recognized and rewarded for their reading efforts. This year, each child who completed and logged their required twenty (20) minutes of daily reading earned a Que Buck which was placed on a computerized spinning wheel used to randomly select a name.  In addition, the names of top readers in grades K- 3 and 4-5 were entered in a separate drawing.  The lucky winner selected by the spinning wheel received a gift certificate for a book of their choosing.  The four students whose names were picked in the other drawing each received a bike.  The chapter’s Que Bucks celebration culminated with a pizza party on 13 December for the classrooms with the highest Que Bucks point total in each grade level.  During the pizza party, Sigma Mu Mu brothers visited each individual classroom where they engaged in activities, conversed with the students, and encouraged them to continue reading.  The Sugarland Elementary Principal, Dr. Gregory Mihalik, and librarian, Ms. Kim Grim, gave high praise to Sigma Mu Mu at the conclusion of both events.
