Sigma Mu Mu Supports VREM Press Conference and Souls-to-the-Polls March
On November 2, 2024, Sigma Mu Mu Chapter, Third District of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., supported Loudoun Board of Supervisors Chair-At-Large Phyllis Randall’s press conference about Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin’s last-minute voter purge action prior to the 2024 Presidential election. During the press conference at the Compass Creek Parkway Walmart in Leesburg, VA, Sigma Mu Mu brothers stood in solidarity behind Ms. Randall with members of the League of Women Voters and the Loudoun NAACP. Approximately 50 supporters, including Board of Supervisors members Ms. Sylvia Glass, Mr. Mike Turner, and Ms. Juli Briskman, attended the media event during which Ms. Randall voiced her opposition to the governor’s action that removed citizens from voter registration rolls shortly before election day. She indicated the Board of Supervisors wrote a letter signed by seven (7) of nine (9) Supervisors that expressed disappointment and disagreement with the voter purge, and requested a reversal of Youngkin’s decision as soon as possible. After making prepared remarks, Ms. Randall was interviewed by members of the media, including TV Channel 4's Derrick Ward.
When the press conference concluded, Loudoun NAACP President Pastor Michelle Thomas led a “Souls to the Polls” march from Walmart to the Loudoun County Board of Elections Office in Leesburg. The march was sponsored by the Loudoun NAACP to encourage citizens to vote and to increase community awareness of voting rights changes. Pastor Thomas led the participants in prayer and chants before, during, and after the march. At the Elections Office, several members from the Jack and Jill organization and the NAACP Youth Group expressed with passion their gratitude to the those who are here to continue fighting for justice. Others took advantage of the opportunity to vote.
Sigma Mu Mu Brothers Leroy Ross, Brian Johnson, Duane Keye, Michael Bennett, Rayfus Gary, Edward Harmon III, Curtis Hollie, Jr., Paul Forbes, Kelly Miller, and Larry Melton were among the Omega men who supported the press conference and march. Their presence contributed to a united front by the many participating organizations and individuals, bringing attention to the need to vote in the 2024 Presidential election.
