2017 Sigma Mu Mu Serves Up Breakfast, Fellowship for Homeless in Loudoun

Loudoun County, VA Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Sigma Mu Mu Chapter, routinely lends a helping hand to those in need, and is guided by its unwavering obligation to lift as we climb.

On February 24, 2017, the Brothers of Sigma Mu Mu gathered early to provide breakfast for the residents of the Loudoun Homeless Emergency Shelter in Leesburg, Virginia. “Breakfast by the Bruhs”, a recurring meal service, is a social action initiative led by Bro. Drew Gerald. The Brothers cooked, served and catered to all the needs of the residents. On the menu was an old-fashioned breakfast of scrambled eggs, grits, french toast, bacon, sausage, fresh fruit and orange juice. This breakfast is quite popular and was well received at the homeless shelter. It allows residents to partake in a hearty meal, while giving Brothers an opportunity to interact directly with the residents and hear their stories.

The emergency shelter, operated by Volunteers of America® Chesapeake (VOA), is one of the programs provided at the Loudoun Homeless Services Center. The staff collaborates with local churches, professionals, civic groups and volunteers to address the basic needs of the residents. Sigma Mu Mu’s involvement, outreach and assistance are beneficial, and allow VOA to carry out its broad mission of inspiring self-reliance, dignity and hope for its homeless clients. Needless to say, the Omega men of Sigma Mu Mu continually contribute to raising the hopes and lifting the spirits of many of our less fortunate brothers and sisters in the community.

SMM Health Initiatives Black Friday Bowl

Leesburg, VA – On November 25, 2016 members of the Sigma Mu Mu Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. braved the chilly weather, and laced up their cleats for the 4th Annual Morven Park Black Friday Flag Football Tournament.  The tournament, which began in 2012, has grown from 60 players to over 300 players. This year over 15 teams participated.  Sigma Mu Mu has participated in the event twice. The organizers, other participants and referees noted the grit and toughness that players from the chapter exhibited.

Although Sigma Mu Mu didn’t take the winner’s trophy this year, brothers took the field and displayed a valiant effort in three games over a span of four hours.  Many of the brothers brought their children to observe the tournament and to participate.   When asked about the competitive nature of flag football, Sigma Mu Mu members explained that it was not about winning or losing but about the fellowship throughout the day.  They also discussed the health benefits gained from the rigorous exercise associated with flag football.  Not to be outdone, Sigma Mu Mu plans to start practicing a little earlier to get a jump on next year’s competition.

Love of a Father Breakfast 2016

Sterling, VA On June 18, 2016 Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Sigma Mu Mu Chapter, held its 3rd Annual “Love Of A Father Breakfast” at Applebee’s restaurant.

This pancake breakfast brought together over 80 patrons. Attendees included fathers, men accepting the role of fathers, children, other family members, civic leaders and representatives from the local social services agency. The purpose of this gathering of members of the Loudoun community was to celebrate Father’s Day; and stress the importance of responsible fatherhood. Sigma Mu Mu through its Fatherhood Initiative activities, such as this event, is always striving to develop, enhance, support, and highlight the absolute necessity for responsible fathers. To accomplish this, the chapter intends to educate men on parenting; facilitate family engagement opportunities; explain legal parental rights; organize education seminars; and hold job summits. Additionally, in partnership with the Loudoun County Department of Family Services, Sigma Mu Mu will endeavor to help educate, mentor and assist at-risk youth in the local community.

Brother Marcus Fisher, the Fatherhood Committee Chair, served as the master of ceremonies (“MC”) and keynote speaker at the breakfast. He began by honoring and recognizing Omega fathers, biological fathers, and men currently serving as father figures in the community.

Brother Fisher specifically highlighted both their unyielding commitment to help raise responsible kids and their efforts in teaching them to be productive citizens. Key emphasis was placed on the involvement of fathers in the lives of our young black males, and how it’s going to take a “village” approach to help save this demographic. Lyle Davidson, Director of the Loudoun County Family Services Department, was recognized for participating in a joint effort with Sigma Mu Mu to help identify and mentor at-risk teens in Loudoun County.

Dozens of brothers in the chapter served as waiters. As each brother waited on a table, they shared their individual stories with the attendees on how their fathers and male role models positively impacted their lives. Also during the event, a raffle was held and door prizes were handed out to several kids in attendance.

The “Love Of A Father Breakfast” was a festive occasion. It successfully promoted and celebrated responsible fatherhood; and raised funds for Sigma Mu Mu Chapter’s scholarship and social action activities. A good time was had by all, including the brothers who worked the event as hosts, waiters, food/beverage servers, and dishwashers. In doing the work of Omega, Sigma Mu Mu enthusiastically looks forward to expanding the reach and impact of its Fatherhood Initiative activities in Loudoun County, Virginia.
