Sigma Mu Mu’s Que-Bucks Program Wraps up its 2018 Fall Session
Sterling, VA- The Brothers of Sigma Mu Mu Chapter in Loudoun County, VA. closed out the Fall session of their Que-Bucks Program with Sugarland Elementary School on Thursday, December 20th.
The participation level from the children of Sugarland was, and has always been, phenomenal. The Que Bucks program easily involves 400 students, and each one was super excited for the close-out day to come. Why? Because it involved prizes, and what kid does not like receiving prizes? Every child is in the running, and their chances get higher based on the discipline they maintain to read more and more.
This close-out summed up just the Fall session of the full school year program. During this session, the entire school read for nearly 9,000 hours. The program spans from Kindergarten to 5th grade. That involves 25 classrooms full of energetic kids that were eager to read as a part of the Que Bucks program. The close-out involved a presentation of which a group of chapter Brothers presented Que Buck coupons in the amounts of $10, $5, and $5 to the top three readers of each class, respectively. Each of the first place winners received another chance to win even more by having their names placed in the drawing to win an Amazon Kindle.
With reward comes great responsibility. We not only gave the children gifts, we also poured into them words of encouragement and praise. Some of these youth come from homes where they do not have access to books or someone pushing them to read, read, read. The Brothers of Sigma Mu Mu want to continue to fill that void by being the bridge builders that we know how to be. So we look forward to the Spring session and re-enforcing in the kids minds that there are no limits in life once you master reading.
Sigma Mu Mu Collects Toys and Bikes at Annual Toy Drive
Loudoun County, VA— The Brothers of Sigma Mu Mu Chapter (SMM) continue to do their part to ensure that children in need throughout Loudoun County are able to enjoy a toy or two this holiday season.
On December 8, 2018, SMM held its annual Santa’s Workshop toy drive at the Super Wal-Mart in Sterling, Virginia. Many dedicated Brothers came out layered up and ready to work. They actively engaged with patrons and encouraged them to donate toys, bikes and money for the children of less fortunate families. Due to the generosity of local community residents and other supporters over 6,000 individual toys were collected, including 21 bikes. Also, cash donations were used to buy more toys. At the conclusion of the event, the Toys for Tots team for Loudoun County, arrived to collect all of the toys. They delivered them to the local office/distribution center.
Now in its 6th year, Santa’s Workshop supports the Loudoun County Toys for Tots Campaign, which in turn supports the National Toys for Tots Foundation. The goal is to provide toys for needy children during the Christmas season. By participating in such a worthy cause, Sigma Mu Mu lifted the spirits of families, and accomplished its mission by bringing smiles to deserving children.
Loudoun County, VA — On October 15, 2017, the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., Sigma Mu Mu Chapter, held its annual Dr. Charles R. Drew Blood Drive. The Brothers partnered with the Inova Blood Donor
Services Center of Sterling,Virginia. The initial goal was to have 17 donors give blood. However a total of 26 donors signed up. Almost half of the donors were members of the community who walked in after beingencouraged to volunteer by Brothers outside of the building. Inova officials appreciated and recognized the good work of Sigma Mu Mu for bringing in so many donors. This is important because donors are needed
now more than ever. The demand for blood is increasing while blood donation levels are decreasing.
The Inova Blood Donor Services Center supplies lifesaving blood and blood products to 24 different hospitals in Northern Virginia and throughout the Washington metropolitan area. They also work with national and international redistribution organizations. The Inova team looks forward to and is eager to again work with Sigma Mu Mu at next year’s blood drive.
Once again, Sigma Mu Mu demonstrated its commitment to service in Loudoun County. By leading this worthy effort to raise awareness of the need for an increase in the blood supply, the Brothers helped to
