Loudoun County, VA - On November 4, 2017, the Brothers of Sigma Mu Mu (SMM) Chapter, in a joint effort with Operation Uplift Foundation, held their 7th Annual Achievement Week Brunch at Belmont Country Club in Ashburn, Virginia. The event highlighted the accomplishments of eight influential people in Loudoun County. These leaders are often recognized for their willingness to strive for ways of empowering and uplifting their fellow residents.
The awards presented during the event included: (1) Citizen of the Year - Mrs. Phyllis Randall, Chair, Loudoun County Board of Supervisors; (2) Educator of the Year - Ms. Shalonda Dixon, teacher at Balls Bluff Elementary; (3) Purple and Gold Community Service Award - Mrs. Lorrie Penn Hunter, Loudoun County National Pan-Hellenic Council president; (4) Colonel Charles Young Military Leadership Award - Brother Johari Hemphill; (5) Superior Service Award - Brother Reginald Parker; (6) Founders' Award - Brother William “Kip” Ward; (7) Community Partner of the Year - Walmart Supercenter at Dulles Town Crossing; and (8) Omega Man of the Year - Brother Shawn Lacey, current 3rd District Keeper of Records and Seal (KRS).
The keynote speaker for the occasion was Brother David Marion, current 1st Vice Grand Basileus of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated. During the brunch, Brother Marion engaged in a frank discussion about Manhood and its historical and future relevance within our fraternity and society.
The Achievement Week Brunch was well attended, as SMM Chapter members, their families, and friends were present. Included amongst the attendees were distinguished Omega men in leadership positions in the Fraternity: Brother Kevin Brown, current 3rd District Representative; Brother Robert C. Warren, Jr., Esq., former 3rd District Representative; and Brother Shawn Lacey, current 3rd District KRS. Several SMM Chapter members participated in the program. Brother Rev. Chad Carlton gave the invocation, Brother Shawn Lacey gave the welcoming and closing remarks, and chapter Basileus Brother Michael Bennett described the significance of the occasion to the audience. Brother Trevor Talbert introduced the keynote speaker, while Brother William “Kip” Ward gave the benediction.
