Que-Bucks Close out 2016
Sigma Mu Mu’s Que-Bucks Program Keeps Students Reading
Sterling, VA- Students at Sugarland Elementary are hitting the books, thanks to the brothers of Sigma Mu Mu Chapter in Loudoun County, VA.
Since 2012, the Chapter has partnered with the school to encourage students to read on a daily basis. Serving as a Social Action and Assault on Illiteracy initiative, the Que-Bucks program ties in with the school’s own Accelerated Reader program by encouraging students to become more avid readers. For each book read, students can earn a stamp on their Que-Buck. Once 20 stamps have been earned, each student’s Que-Buck is placed in a drawing for individual prizes. The drawing, held at the end of each semester, awards various prizes to students from each grade level.
Currently in its 5th year of operation at Sugarland, the Que-Bucks program was expanded this year to include students in kindergarten all the way through grade 5. Students throughout the school were encouraged to participate, as brothers initially visited the school in September to kick off the program. On December 2, 2016, brothers of Sigma Mu Mu returned to the school to announce the top readers for the fall semester and distribute prizes. Students from all grade levels were awarded $10 gift certificates redeemable towards the purchase of books and other items at the school’s semi-annual book fair. As an added incentive, the two top readers were also awarded bicycles for their efforts. Students are not only discovering the inherent joys of reading, but they are also reaping the benefits of their efforts within the classroom. Accordingly, the brothers of Sigma Mu Mu are happy to provide them with the opportunity to do so.
For the 2016-2017 school year, the Chapter will award approximately $1,600 in prizes and gifts to the top readers in the school.
